Make And Do the Design*Sponge way: Keeley's suitcase table

There are scores of uses for vintage suitcases, but this one, by artist Keeley Durocher, is our favourite.

Cost: About €30

Time: 1.5 hours

What You’ll Need

  • An old hard-panel suitcase, in relatively good condition.
  • A set of four twist-on legs (retainer shelf optional) salvaged from a disused side table (or you can find these in good DIY shop, at IKEA, or on eBay)
  • Matching metal anchor plates for the legs
  • A piece of MDF to line the bottom of the case, the corners angled
  • Spray gloss paint
  • Screwdriver
  • Screws

How To

  1. Clean and dry the suitcase. In a well-ventilated area, spray it all over, including the fittings, with your chosen shade of paint. Allow to dry, then respray the area that was in contact with the ground while drying.
  2. Place the MDF inside the bottom of the case. Flip it over, and rest it on a stool to provide resistance. From the underside of the suitcase, screw in the metal anchor plates in the four corners of the suitcase. The screws should be long enough to go through the plate, the suitcase, and half the depth of the MDF.
  3. Affix legs onto plates through the centre hole, twisting them on. Spray the legs to match, or in a contrasting colour for more impact. Case closed!
