IKEA first teased us about their upcoming collection with Danish design brand HAY a year ago, at the company's Democratic Design Day in 2016. That time of year has come around again, meaning we have more details and images from the forthcoming Hay x IKEA collaboration collection, called YPPERLIG.
It won't hit stores until October 2017, and there's so much more to it than HAY's forest green take on IKEA's iconic blue FRAKTA bags we were shown already. For starters, there's a second take on the FRAKTA tote, in yellow and black.
But you can also expect furniture, lighting, accessories and textile designs, created using advanced manufacturing techniques. IKEA released photos showing a light wood dining table, a molded side chair, and a minimal, channel tufted settee with a slightly flared arm.
"Scandinavian design identity will be explored in this collaboration. The technical manufacturing expertise of IKEA meets the sophisticated chic of HAY, developed from the first ideas and sketches using the Democratic Design process. Making products accessible to the many people – is also a value also shared by HAY," say IKEA.
Originally planned to be a 35-piece collection, it has since expanded to 65 pieces, with a particular focus on homewares and furniture for the living room. YPPERLIG is set to be a collection of understated yet contemporary staples.
Given that IKEA has given HAY the freedom to reinvent signature IKEA products, such as the iconic FRAKTA bag, we're hoping to see some future IKEA classics in the YPPERLIG collection.
