Take a clash course on the ultimate throwback trend of the season - the 80s are back

The 80s are back in a big way this season, and we're all about it. We're not talking the decade of floral chintz, wallpaper borders and overstuffed sofas - that can stay exactly where it is. But the interiors world is reviving the Memphis trend - originally called The New Design, this style was renamed Memphis inspired by the Bob Dylan song, ‘Stuck Inside of Mobile (With the Memphis Blues Again)’.

“When I was young, all we ever heard about was functionalism, functionalism, functionalism. It’s not enough. Design should also be sensual and exciting,” said architect Ettore Sottsass, the founder of the Memphis print.

The modern take on the 80s interiors trend is a hybrid, taking a few elements from the decade, but framing them in a firmly contemporary way. We're talking takes on the postmodern designs of the Memphis Group, an Italian collaborative that produced bold geometric furniture and designs in bright, poppy colours pared with perfect pastels. The contemporary interpretation of the trend abandons some need for function and embraces more wit and humour, borrowing heavily from the past and creating eclectic spaces with unexpected results. The clashing colours and mismatched geometric shapes are tonnes of fun, but probably best kept to design features rather than splashed across every element of a room.
