Renovating your home is a huge undertaking, not least because building work and materials are more expensive than ever. Here's three expert tips from Peter Finn, builder and RTÉ Home Rescue presenter.

1. Rework the layout
“If your existing home doesn’t flow, it doesn’t always help to add. Look to maximise what’s there first; sometimes, the solution can be as simple as repurposing rooms. You’d be amazed at how much light and space is achieved by opening a kitchen to the living room.”

2. Change surfaces
“Updating floor and wall surfaces can dramatically change the look and feel
of your home, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Make sure the materials are right for each room. Absorbent materials like carpet and wallpaper can help to reduce echo and add comfort in big rooms, while smaller rooms benefit from light reflective surfaces like painted walls and wooden floors.”

3. Think sustainably
“When planning any home improvements, always try to incorporate green upgrades. Whether that’s a simple swap like LED lighting or installing solar panels; lean towards companies with eco manufacturing ethics. Simple changes can have a big impact; never underestimate the compound effect of everyone doing their bit.”
