We're just back from Decorex, one of the top annual trade shows for interior designers and industry professionals, which took place last week at London's Royal Hospital Chelsea.
This year, one of the main themes was Alice in Wonderland, as seen at the gorgeous Nina Campbell stand, with mad hatters and Alices roaming the halls with tea party treats for us to enjoy as we soaked up the big trends for 2011. We're happy to report that with autumn-winter 2010 setting in, the folksy vibe is back. Rich, luxurious textiles and ethnic-inspired prints were everywhere. On the other end of the spectrum, after years of oversized graphic florals and zany striped prints, tasteful heritage wallpapers and paints are making a return. The Little Greene Paint Company makes perfect replicas of 18th, 19th and 20th century wallpapers, which were literally scraped off the walls of grand houses in London by English Heritage conservationists. The company, established in 1773, is now based in Manchester and prints its wares on an ancient wallpaper press to achieve the most authentic reproductions. Little Greene is expanding its operations in Ireland, so expect to see a lot more of them in 2011.
We also met the lovely Tracy Kendall, who won the Scarlet Opus award for best on-trend product at the fair for her amazing handmade and texturised wallpapers. Later on, we spoke to Brigid of Brigid Stevens Studios, which makes amazing modernist lighting and tables; Brigid’s work is uber-modern and elegant, and she tells us she’s now happy to ship her work to Ireland.
