Ryan Rankin, of Ryan Rankin Studio, was tasked with redesigning a bungalow on the edge of a Kerry lough for a London-based family. “We worked on the vision together,” says Ryan. “They wanted a retreat for their family, a place to reconnect with their roots and nature.” Having worked with the family before on their London home, Ryan had a deep understanding of how they liked to live – from where the kids liked to hang out to where they wanted to leave their shoes when they came in the door. Brought in at the later stage of the build, Ryan made essential last-minute changes to the floor plan. It was important to him that the interior space simplified their lives. “We wanted to make this house more efficient than their London home, but we still wanted it to feel really crafted.”

This renovation is packed with personality, so Ryan shared his top tips for creating an eclectic interior design scheme:

1. Artwork with personality: Mix styles, scales and mediums to create a curated yet effortless look. Anchor with large statement pieces and layer in characterful flea market finds for charm and spontaneity.

2. Layered lighting for ambience: Combine sconces, pendants and table lamps to add depth and warmth. Mixing materials like metal, glass, and fabric enhances the eclectic aesthetic.

3. Blending old and new: Pair contemporary pieces with antiques for a home that feels collected, not staged. Maintain cohesion with a consistent colour palette or recurring materials.

4. Pattern and texture play: Mix rich textures like velvet, linen and bouclé with bold and subtle prints. Contrast and layering create a dynamic, inviting space.

5. Effortless styling: Statement pieces – mirrors, sculptures or antique vessels – add personality. Balance curated moments with a lived-in feel for a home that’s stylish yet welcoming.
