1. Create a master plan
When approaching this kind of extreme makeover, take the time to design in an holistic manner, considering all aspects of the project right down to the last handle on the door. This will give you a master plan and something to aim for, particularly in the midst of the renovation. It helps to ensure elements of the job are worked on in the correct and right order which is best practice.
2. Get the proportions right
Make the most of high ceilings, play with the cornicing, ceiling roses and plaster detailing, they can make the space feel taller and bigger even if the square metres on the ground aren’t so big. Take time to really research these details, it’s so important to get the scale and proportion of the cornicing right.
3. Consider the weight of fittings
If you are planning to put a bath or anything of any substantial weight into a period home you must check the lintels above the windows as these are typically timber and may not support the weight of a Victorian steel bath, especially with water and someone inside it! Remember these baths wouldn’t traditionally have been inside a house – and even then not on a second or third level – so you might need concrete fills and steel supports.
4. Take your time
Don’t rush, it’s okay to take your time with a project like this. Old houses are a big investment so ensure you get it right from the start by thinking through all the small details. If you need to do the renovation in stages because of budget and time, it will be well worth it.
