You wouldn't be too far wrong if you guessed that designers know a thing or two about colour, and that that's reflected in their home interiors style. It's at least very true for Vincent Lim and Elaine Lu, who relocated to Hong Kong from New York with their eye on a project. There was an apartment that had been in Vincent's family for years that needed some TLC, and they have totally transformed it.
Once a closed off space, the couple wanted a more flexible, colourful home that was full of natural light. They left their mark on the property, starting with replacing the walls that closed off rooms with glass and steel sliding doors. It left the home with a much more airy, open feel, without slipping into what the couple call a 'now ubiquitous New York industrial style'.
The two put some emphasis on the saturated walls with patterned tiles and bold furniture, leaving them with a space that feels both sleek and fun. "The furniture was a slow process [because] we didn't want to clutter the space," Elaine said. "We moved in first without any furniture and we designed and curated the furniture based on our needs."
At 1,200 square feet, the revamped address doubles as a showroom for their newly-launched furniture pieces, too, from their company, Lim+Lu.
White walls and diffused light makes for a perfect backdrop for the pops of colour they've introduced, from the pastel Kvadrat fabric of the Lim+Lu Mass collection daybed and sofa accented by Hay Dot cushions. A framed table with white marble panels and a brass finish, which is also by the designers, rests on an O'Seka rug.
The iconic Fritz Hansen's Panton and Drop chairs sit alongside Lim+Lu's spin vase on their mable table. Striking light fixtures are dotted throughout the apartment, adding drama and interest to the space. The warm oak flooring in the core living space provides a nice contrast to the colourful patterns on the ceramic tiles in the home's extension areas, such as the guest bedroom and the dressing rooms.
Their handcrafted Lim+Lu Lunar mirror hangs against a deep jewel-toned green wall, which is totally different in tone to the pastels in the living area, but works beautifully.
The kitchen's original cabinetry sits side by side with a new dining space, which boasts authentic Andy Warhol artwork on the wall. At the table, Emeco's Navy chair and an Eames Side Chair sit alongside the Drop chairs by Fritz Hansen. An Eames chair has views to the living space at the couple's self-designed marble dining table.
A cosy master bedroom features a Lim+Lu bed with drawers accented by an Ohhio throw. An oversized floor lamp purchased in Hong Kong's Yizhan Centre stands nearby.
